Anna (on right) sorting screen contents at Teso dos Bichos (mound on Marajo Island, Brazil) in 1983. The archaeologists are looking for carbonized bone and seeds. The geophysical surveys and excavation uncovered a large early village on an artificial mound. The dates showed that it was about a thousand years old. The food remains showed a mixed economy of crop and tree cultivation, plant gathering and fishing.
