View of Taperinha plantation. This property in Santarem, Brazil was a
sugar plantation and iron forge belonging to the Baron of Santarem in
the late 19th century. An earlier plantation building is mentioned in
original deed papers held by the current owners. From the early 20th
century until today it is owned by the Hagman family of researchers
and business people. A Frenchman designed the handsome building made
of hardpacked mud and shell. Outbuildings and parts of the plantation
machines remain dispersed on the plantation. The Taperinha shellmound
excavatd by Roosevelt and colleagues (Roosevelt et al. 1992) lies on
the edge of the unflooded land overlooking what is now a wooded swamp.
19th century geologists found early projectile points, the
shellmound, and late prehistoric pottery on the property.
